After showing an updated version of the GT-R earlier this year, Nissan is now applying similar changes to the hard-core GT-R NISMO. There’s good news and bad news: The bad news is that there’s no more power than before, with the 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-6 making the same 600 horsepower. The good news is that the NISMO’s interior receives the same upgrades as the standard GT-R, a modernization that was long overdue for the aging R35 generation of Nissan’s performance flagship.

 

Although the NISMO version does without many of the standard GT-R’s more luxurious interior bits, the new cabin marks a significant improvement. Nissan has reduced the number of center-stack buttons from 27 to 11, and a new, larger 8.0-inch touchscreen can also be operated via a console-mounted control knob. Microsuede adorns the dash and the redesigned steering wheel, and the Recaro seats feature red microsuede inserts.

As far as performance, the GT-R NISMO should be just as brutally quick as before—we recorded a zero-to-60-mph time of 2.9 seconds in 2014—and may be able to turn in faster lap times thanks to a mildly upgraded chassis. The shocks, springs, and stabilizers are retuned to correspond with the 2017 model’s stiffer body structure. The VR38DETT twin-turbo V-6 is unchanged, as are the six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and the all-wheel-drive system.

 

We have to squint to see the visual differences between the current GT-R NISMO and its predecessor, but Nissan assures us, at least, that many of the changes are functional. The larger V-Motion front grille collects more air, reinforcements to the hood help avoid deformation at high speeds, and the new model generates more downforce than before.

Nissan says the GT-R NISMO will be offered in four exterior colors—Super Silver, Solid Red, Jet Black, and Pearl White—and pricing should rise slightly from the current car’s $151,585 starting MSRP.
